Nikolaï Kolyada is still pretty much unknown in France. He will not remain so for long. His Hamlet is enveloped in pagan celebrations. With Kolyada, the actor’s voices have become urgent, essential. Shakespeare’s words are sung, chewed, chanted by wonderfully savage actors who twist and knead them just like the canvases hanging from the walls that are slashed. Speed, fusion and infectiousness are all present at this impure feast where the director himself, dressed as a pathetic angel, plays the role of the Ghost who has come to take the naked body of Ophelia, while his fetish actor, Oleg Yagodine, gives the restless, dark prince, all the beauty of a character from Visconti.
