The Young Woman, the Devil and the Mill A poor miller meets the Devil, without actually recognizing him. The Devil offers him untold of wealth if in three years time, he gives him what is found behind his mill. The miller accepts without realizing that what is behind his mill... is his daughter! On the given day, three years later, the Devil shows up, but the purity of the young woman makes it impossible for him to approach her. He goes so far as to cut off her hands, but she still keeps him at bay... Alone now, and lost, wandering and starving, the young woman, with the help of an Angel, enters the Prince's garden. The prince recognizes her as his promised beloved, marries her and offers her... a pair of silver hands !
But then a long war breaks out, and the Prince has to leave. The Devil (in disguise) intercepts the letters that the couple exchange with each other, and « returns from the battle front » with a faked order from the Prince : the Princess must die ! With help from the Angel, the unfortunate princess hides in the forest. Seven years later, the prince finds her, kisses her son - and discovers with astonishment that the Princess's hands have grown back.
The Water of LifeThree brothers are kneeling at the deathbed of their father, the king. The only way to save him is to find the water of life. The eldest son, then the middle son, go off looking for it. They meet a beggar, do not realize that he is in fact an angel, and they are transformed into animals. The youngest son blindfolds himself. He recognizes the angel. With his help, he enters the Ice Palace, saves the Princess who is prisoner there, and promises her that he shall return.
On his way back home, the youngest son saves his two brothers. But the latter steal the water of life from him, and then accuse him, in front of their father, of having tried to poison him. The unfortunate son must flee. The eldest and then the middle son, try in vain to marry the princess, and both of them are again punished by the angel. The king finds out the truth, manages to find his youngest son and the latter finally marries his beloved princess.
The True Sweetheart A year earlier, the young woman lost her mother.
That day, her father returned with a new wife. The cruel stepmother imposed the most impossible ordeals upon the poor girl. With the help of the angel, she managed to overcome them. But the stepmother finally chased her out of the castle.
The young woman hides in the forest and meets the Prince, who promises her that he will soon return soon and rescue her. Meanwhile, she meets a troop of wandering actors, who perform an excerpt from a fairy tale for her. The Prince crosses paths with the stepmother and the latter forces him to drink the water of forgetfulness. The poor young woman is thrown in prison. She discovers that the actors are also there in jail... Together they all perform a play before the court. The prince, who has agreed to play his own role, acts out (and relives) his encounter with his beloved princess. He finally recognizes her and the father and the angel make it in time for the wedding celebrations.
