What becomes of a « Europe » that breaks with the « Ideal » ?
in conjuncture with the publication of François Jullien's book « The Invention of the Ideal and the destiny of Europe ».
«Quand je pose la question : «Qu’est-ce que l’Europe ?», il s’agit d’interroger ce qui l’a portée dans son développement durant tant de siècles ; à la fois ce dont elle a tiré sa fécondité théorique et ce dont elle s’est écartée. Ce que j’appellerai ici son «destin» – cette ressource de l’idéal, aujourd’hui est-elle épuisée ?»
François Jullien, philosophe et sinologue, est professeur à l’Université Paris-Diderot, Directeur du Centre Marcel Granet et de l’Institut de la pensée contemporaine. La plupart de ses ouvrages sont édités au Seuil. Le dernier est paru en septembre 2009 L’invention de l’idéal et le destin de l’Europe.

Avons-nous véritablement besoin de cette figure tutélaire issue des récits en ces temps où les anti-héros nous sont présentés chaque jour sous les feux de la rampe... comme les véritables héros de notre société ?
