Since May '68

Reflection workshops.
As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of May' 68, the Ina (the National Audiovisual Institute) and the Théâtre de l'Odéon, its geographical setting so important for the movement, wish to share, above and beyond the static and cacophony, echoes from this extremely important and powerful moment of history in France and the world.

From May 13d to June 21st Installation
Frequency 68

Pay attention to your ears, they may have walls around them
(slogan found on the walls of Censier University)
Radio played an extremely important role during the events of May '68. It was a constant source of information and disinformation. Ina dug into its archives and the "sound hunter" at France Inter, Caroline Cartier has established an audio chronicle of the period. Permanent studio installation at the Théâtre de l'Odéon in the Serreau and Gémier studios.
Free Admission.

Saturday May, 10th
Multimedia library celebration from 6:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Encounters

Down with journalists and those who protect them
(slogan found on the walls of the Sorbonne)
What image, what images from May' 68 have the media used to portray the events, both then and through the subsequent years during the various anniversary celebrations ? What was the perception of those who were not present in the "occupied territories" during the uprising ? What is the sociological, political or imaginary map that was drawn by the media ?

A roundtable discussion hosted by Laure Adler along with the screening of audiovisual documents from the Ina and Guillaume Durand (journalist), Jean-Pierre Filiu (professor at Sciences-Po and author of Mai '68 at the ORTF - former name of the French broadcasting service), André Gattolin (chief editor of the special issue of MédiaMorphoses (published by Ina) and ex-development and research manager for the daily newspaper, Libération), Pierre Haski (journalist, founder of Rue89), Marie-José Mondzain (philosopher). Writing May '68
Joint publication (Éditions Argol)

" Whether it be literary works that deal with the « events » of May '68, those that though they don't directly address the events, originate from or are made possible because of the social mutations engendered by the events, or even the much deeper transformations that are more underground as well, of writing itself, the new forms and shapes writing took and the stakes it posed. . » (excerpt from the preface by Dominique Viard).

Monday, May 19th
Theater and Cinema, the frictions of May 68 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.Encounters

We must not wait for the spectacle of protest but go directly to the protest of spectacle.
(slogan seen on the walls of the Odéon)
From The Paravents (1966) to Vilar en Avignon (July, 1968) in France and in the rest of the world, artists from all walks found themselves in a fever of excitement. The theater, a space for the spoken word, plays a central role but is also violently challenged. We witness the birth of a new generation of stage directors (the Villeurbanne declaration), and film-makers who are emancipated, and break with tradition. Others, like Pasolini, throw their support behind, not the students throwing paving stones, but the police : "They are the real workers !", considering that the students demonstrating are children of the bourgeoisie, protesting just as a matter of form.

A roundtable of guests, introduced by Olivier Py hosted by Laure Adler and the screening of audiovisual documents from the Ina by Robert Abirached (theater historian), Marie-Ange Rauch (author of Le Théâtre en France en 1968, crise d'une histoire, histoire d'une crise), Jack Ralite (senator and fellow traveler of Jean Vilar), Hervé Le Roux (director of the remarkable "Reprise"). (in progress)

Événements : previously unpublished text by Didier-Georges Gabily from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Public reading
A teenager in 1968, Didier-Georges Gabily returns twenty years after the facts to discuss what it was that created the "events", from both a social and an intimate point of view. Different places, scenes, stories, situated in 1968, merge with a sort of vast terrain bearing the traces of past revolts and lost illusions.
With Ulla Baugue, Catherine Baugue, Gilbert Beugnot, Frédérique Duchene, Elisabeth Doll, Bernard Ferrera, Patrick Fontana, Franck Frappat, Frédéric Leidgens, Jean-François Sivadier, Xavier Tavera, Nanténé Traore.
